Photographer Ileana is Fired

A lot of people have been asking me lately why I have not been blogging so much on Sophie's site. No, I have not been too preoccupied with the tinybungalow site. No, I have not been worked to death so much that I can't blog. No, I still don't sleep in past 5:30am. Hopefully this blog will explain things.

I am not sure what to blame it on but for some reason or other, since becoming a mother, Ileana's photographic skills have been slipping. For those that have known her for more than 15 years know that she has always been an avid photographer, with work in several University at Albany yearbooks. She is also known to always have a camera around her neck at any major friend or family event.

Since the advent of digital photography both she and I are seen less and less with our SLRs and more and more with our small Canon digital. You would think that this would make some of us more prolific. No focusing, no setting flash settings, no fooling with the aperture - just point and shoot. Well one of us at least has found this an incredible challenge.

This post will include EVERY photo Ileana took at Passover dinner - where we had a nice grilled leg of lamb, beautiful Seder plate, and a nice intimate gathering of a few friends. I am also including all of Sophie's first Easter Basket photos. I hate to be a baby about this but I have been getting a lot of crap - well, what do you expect when I have so little to work with. Excuse me, could you take more than three pictures a day? It's not like you have to go and develop the things afterwards.

Let me know if you disagree but from this point on, Ileana is fired. She will not be allowed to be in charge of the camera at any major events from this point forward. Just look at that - the cutest kid on one of the cutest days of the year - and that dress. How could she not get a great photo of Sophie in the most adorable dress in the world? (thanks Suzanne, we'll try to get a nice photo some other day).

Could we see a little face? Where the hell is the kid's face? And what the hell is that kid looking at. The photos of the basket are nice because you can see she is focused on something but those other photos I just don't get - you would think that Elmo was right in our goddamn living room and you couldn't get her attention away from him. I can just imagine if this continues until Sophie's high school graduation - "Awesome photo of the tent Mrs. Payne." "Wow, what a great view of Sophie staring into oblivion Mrs. Payne." "What a fantastic view of a black square, what was going in this photo Mrs. Payne?" Please!

O.K. I think I've gotten that off my chest. Sorry if I was a bit too cruel and sorry for the spelling errors - this one went straight to blog sans spellcheck because I am so upset.

Well, after putting you through that trauma, here is a funny pic of Sophie trapsing around the house Easter morning - what a trip. Yes, I took it. Now I don't want to hear anyone's crap sticking up for Ileana's photography by ragging on this precious photo. Yeah, you don't see the face, but that's the point, she is acting like a nut all on her own and doesn't know I'm there - it's called capturing a moment. Anyway, I'll try to do better at the blogging but now that I have duties as photographer and blogger, please be patient.

On a side not, if you hunger for more blogs from China, our friend Kim is there right now meeting her daughter, Ella. See the link in my new "China Blogs" Section.

Sophie's Afternoon Out

Sophie and Ileana went to Kim's shower on Sunday. Kim has been given very short notice and will be leaving for China next week to get her daughter, Ella. Sophie can already say Ella's name and gets very excited when she sees babies - I am sure she'll like Ella. Since I did not go to the shower, there are very few pictures - here is a nice one of Sophie all dressed up. This week is Easter/Passover, I am sure there will be more pics to come.

O.K. You People Need to Chill

Sophie will not be substituted by a blog about a house. We will continue to post insanely cute photos of Sophie. Perhaps we'll start a "PaynesinOakPark" someday but we still haven't grown accustomed to being suburbanites. Until then, enjoy:

Another Saga Begins

Today it became official. We have a signed contract for a home. We will be leaving Chicago and starting a new chapter of our life in Oak Park. Follow our adventures with the new home at the link below. Warning, this new site will ahve fewer photos of Sophie and will be geared toward the restoration and architecturally minded. Hope you enjoy it.

The Children's Museum

This weekend, we took Sophie to the Kohl's Children's Museum where we met some friends we traveled with in China. Contrary to my initial thought that this was a glorified "germ factory", the place was pretty clean and the presence of drool, mucus, and other bodily fluids seemed to be at a minimum.

Sophie had a ball. She explored the "car wash" played with blocks and computers, and had fun with musical instruments. By far the most exciting portion of the museum was the water room. Her level of enjoyment can probably be equated with the amount of time I had to spend with her clothes at the blow drier just outside this room. Sophie seemed to be very interested with catching various items in her fishing net - can't wait to get her fishing where she catches the real thing.

Our day was capped off with lunch at my favorite restaurant, the Yard House. Any place that is kid friendly AND serves 110 beers on tap can't be bad.
